Regarding Nicole and Inspiration

I was looking at photos of Nicole Richie the other day and I got to thinking about style and changes and being true to yourself and all that great sentimental Born this Way stuff. I think how she went from Paris Hilton's cracked out sidekick and transformed into the woman she is now, is incredible.

I think growing up and finding out who you are is probably the coolest thing ever. (I've even dedicated a tattoo to that notion) I feel like style is like wine, it gets better with age. (Holy Cliche!!) And while I am uneasy about admitting to myself that sooner rather than later I'm going to be my early twenties version of OLD, I'm excited about developing my tastes and style and learning who I am.

Looking at Nicole I see a girl just like me, (minus the drugged out part) a girl who wanted to be accepted and loved so bad that she compromised herself and maybe did things that didn't feel natural to her. (For Ms. Richie it was getting high and going on TV with Paris Hilton, and for me it was ModRobes and Roxy Sweaters, same idea, smaller scale) And seeing how she has developed and grown into such a creative individual with such style is really inspiring to me.

A few years ago when it was still cool to be a member of silly Facebook groups, I was in one called "Nicole Richie is a crackhead but I still secretly want to be her". I like to think that even then I knew that she'd get it together and make us all proud.

A Westboro Gem

On Saturday Charles and I did some shopping, and ended up in Westboro at Viens Avec Moi, probably one of the neatest stores I've been to in the city.

It's an old house full of interesting pieces. The combination of Canadian Designers and big brand designers really works here, the quality seeps through the walls.

While there I found a couple drool-worthy items, a Jenny Bird clutch being one, and this great McTega belt that sadly was a bit too tight for my current winter body. Boo!

McTega Belt, Better bet you money that I'm getting a larger one ordered!

Needless to say, Viens Avec Moi is going to become a staple in my shopping routine, y'all should check it out too!

shop shop

After yesterday's snowstorm and subsequent traffic jam, (Over an hour to get to Orleans!) I wanted to go places today!

So we bundled up and headed down to lower Dalhousie to Young Janes. As always, the place delivers, and I got this stunning bag in the nicest shade of...well I don't even know what to call this colour, so I'm going to call it Coral Green. Its so vibrant!

We also hit up this store that I had never been in before called Wunderkammer, a jewelry store. While there it was noted that I will basically drool over any quirky object on a long chain. (A long necklace with an old spoon at the end! YES) Oddly enough I didn't come out with a necklace, but in fact secured the cutest camel scarf with little zebras on it. (Ha! A camel scarf with zebras!)

All in all it was a very successful day, especially considering that I spent less than $40, and supported local businesses.

I suggest anyone who is in the market for stand-out accessories or vintage pieces with character, to check out the new Young Janes location and please hit up Wunderkammer as well!

Ciao, Manhattan

A couple years ago I was obsessed with Edie Sedgwick, an iconic Warhol girl who set the world on fire in the 1960's. She was also an amphetamine addict and burned out way before she should have but while she was here she was the bees knees.  She was such a tragic figure that represented great style and vulnerability and I just wanted to emulate her.

So much of what we think is glamorous can be traced back to Edie Sedgwick wearing it in the '60s: Chandelier earrings, black tights, fur and so much more. And I guarantee that every photo snapped of her over 50 years ago still would make it in today's fashion spreads.

It really blows my mind that such trends and style remain after 50 years. Although she lived a tumultuous life that ultimately ended in tragedy, I think Edie is inspiring for her contribution to our idea of style and glamour.

I've often thought of trying to go as Edie Sedgwick for Halloween, so many pros and yet so many cons! (I'd be buying things that I would wear every day and I would look hella cool in all the photos, but I'd also have to explain to everyone what I am supposed to be, and then get flack from all the witches and sexy nurses for not putting a huge effort to look wacky)
For now I guess I'll just have to settle for drawing inspiration for every day life.

So in my quest to become more social networkey I joined Pinterest, and I'm not going to lie to you, I am totally addicted now.

My days are now spent pinning digital photos to my digital pin-boards and to be honest, that's kind of how I gathered the strength to write a blog. (Don't get me wrong, I am not touting myself as a "blog-writer extraordinaire" but it took me a while to find the courage to write that first post) I figured I was pinning all these amazing posts from these great local blogs, why can't I do the same!

I felt it was a great way to get ones foot wet, so to speak, and get used to putting your opinions out there on the internet.

I love making collages, and that's essentially what Pinterest is: a digital collage.

I made this collage out of lace and snapshots from NYLON magazine before I moved to Ottawa in 2008. I thought I was literally the most creative person in the world. Finally living on my own, I took full advantage of hanging my own pictures and wall-art.

So I guess what I was trying to say is, if you love scrapbooks or collages or just checking out what other people are into, you should totally join Pinterest. And we should totally be Pinterest friends!!

Here I go, Here I go...

I'm jumping on the bandwagon, created a blog. I'm not sure if anyone will care what perspective I have to offer, or if I will have anything interesting to say, but here goes nothing!

Time to quit messin' around and blog!
